A blast caused by an explosive device, according to official statements, struck a cafe in central Damascus, Syria, killing and wounding several people.
The press office at the Syrian Ministry of Health told Enab Baladi that five people were killed and 16 others were wounded in the blast, which occurred on Thursday, July 2, inside al-Mushiriyah Cafe on al-Nasr Street in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced that its units began field procedures immediately after a blast caused by an explosive device.
The announcement came after initial information circulated on social media and local media outlets suggested the blast may have been caused by a lithium battery or a gas cylinder inside the cafe.
The ministry added that Internal Security patrols and ambulance teams went directly to the site after receiving the report. They evacuated the injured and provided the necessary first aid, while imposing a security cordon around the area to ensure public safety and fully secure the surrounding site.
No party had claimed responsibility for the incident by the time this report was prepared.
Crowded Cafe
Al-Mushiriyah Cafe is one of the old and popular cafes in the Syrian capital, Damascus. It is located on al-Nasr Street in the al-Hijaz area, near the Palace of Justice.
The cafe sees active movement and is crowded almost daily because of its location in one of the busiest areas of the city center. It is known as a meeting place for lawyers and legal professionals, especially older people.
Security Mobilization
Mohammad Khait, director of the Third Internal Security Directorate in Damascus, told state-run al-Ikhbariya that patrols headed to the site immediately after receiving the report, where it became clear that the blast was caused by an explosive device.
Khait added that security forces imposed a security cordon around the area as the wounded were transferred and treated.
Khait noted that the area has a continuous security presence, which helped speed the response by the various concerned agencies, including police forces, Civil Defense, and Internal Security, to deal with the incident and secure the site.
For its part, the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management announced that its teams responded to the blast and began ambulance, rescue, and site security operations, alongside precautionary measures to ensure the safety of civilians.
Previous Security Incidents
The al-Mushiriyah Cafe blast came after a series of security incidents witnessed by the capital, Damascus, over the past months.
On May 19, Syrian authorities announced that a soldier from the Syrian Ministry of Defense was killed and 12 others were wounded in a car bomb explosion near the Armament Department of the Syrian Ministry of Defense in Damascus.
The blast coincided with work by an army unit to dismantle an explosive device at the site.
In June 2025, a suicide attack targeted St. Elias Church in the Dweila area, near Bab Sharqi in Damascus, killing 13 people and wounding 53 others at the time.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior said at the time that a suicide bomber affiliated with the Islamic State entered St. Elias Church in the Dweila neighborhood, where he opened fire inside the church before detonating himself with an explosive vest.
