‘One of the Worst Attacks’: Russia Fires 29 Ballistic Missiles at Kyiv Without Intercepts

Ukraine failed to intercept a single ballistic missile during Russia’s latest large-scale attack on Kyiv, according to the Ukrainian Air Force, as the capital endured one of the war’s deadliest strikes.

According to the Air Force, Russia launched a massive combined attack beginning at 6 p.m. on Sunday, using strike drones and air-, land-, and sea-launched missiles. Kyiv was the primary target.

In total, Ukrainian radar tracked 419 aerial targets – 68 missiles and 351 drones of various types, including:

  • 23 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles;
  • 6 3M22 Zircon/Onyx anti-ship missiles;
  • 33 Kh-101 cruise missiles;
  • 6 Kalibr cruise missiles;
  • 351 Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and decoy drones.
  • The attack was repelled by fighter aircraft, air defense units, electronic warfare systems, unmanned systems, and mobile fire groups.

According to preliminary data released by the Air Force, Ukrainian defenses destroyed or suppressed 363 targets – 37 cruise missiles and 326 drones.

Specifically, air defenses intercepted 31 Kh-101 cruise missiles, six Kalibr cruise missiles, and 326 drones.

However, none of the ballistic or anti-ship missiles were intercepted.

“The impacts of 29 ballistic missiles, including anti-ship missiles, and 18 attack drones were recorded at 34 locations, while debris from intercepted drones fell at 16 additional sites,” the Air Force said.

One of Ukraine’s most widely followed military monitoring Telegram channels, Nikolaevsky Vanek, described the barrage as unprecedented.

“One of the worst attacks in my memory was tonight. Not a single ballistic missile or Zircon was shot down,” the channel wrote.

It also said that Russia appeared to be relying increasingly on ballistic missiles during its largest attacks.
