Romanian Livestock Shipments Pass Through Tartus Port

Tartus Port (western Syria) received two commercial ships on Tuesday, May 12, carrying 32,000 head of livestock and calves from Romania, as part of efforts to activate international transit movement through Syrian ports.

The Syrian General Authority for Ports and Customs said the shipments are continuing overland toward the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which “reflects growing regional confidence in the port as a key logistics hub on the Mediterranean basin,” according to the authority.

Operational Efficiency and Strict Procedures

Technical and administrative teams are continuing unloading and handling operations according to the highest standards, while applying an integrated package of measures, according to the authority, including:

  • Veterinary inspection, to ensure the health safety of all incoming livestock.
  • Customs facilitation is to secure the smooth and rapid passage of shipments without delay.
  • Logistical support to accelerate the movement of goods from the port docks to transit trucks.
  • The event reflects the growth of transit movement through Tartus Port and confirms rising regional confidence in the port as a key logistics hub on the Mediterranean, amid ongoing efforts to develop infrastructure and improve the efficiency of services provided, according to the authority.
  • The flow of livestock shipments through the port also constitutes, according to the authority, a positive indicator of the return of regional commercial activity and the recovery of maritime transport routes, in addition to the vital role the port plays in supporting supply chains and food security in neighboring countries.

This comes as part of a plan to develop transit services and strengthen Tartus Port’s position as a main station for regional and international trade movement.

Maritime navigation at Syrian ports also recorded notable activity during the first third of the current year, as the ports of Tartus and Latakia (western Syria) received 509 commercial and technical vessels, amid a tangible increase in cargo handling operations and ship arrivals to the country.

Tartus Port Receives Nearly 300 Ships in Four Months

Tartus Port witnessed growing activity in ship traffic and cargo handling during the first four months of the current year, according to an earlier announcement by the Syrian General Authority for Ports and Customs, as it received 298 ships, including 266 cargo ships and 32 maintenance vessels.

Meanwhile, the total number of ships that entered Latakia Port from the beginning of 2026 until the end of last April reached 211.

At Tartus Port, total import and export operations during the same period exceeded 2.75 million tons, including 2.25 million tons of imported materials, the export of half a million tons of phosphate, and 20,000 tons of various materials.

The most prominent commercial activity, according to the authority, was in April, when Tartus Port received 100 ships, including 94 cargo ships and six maintenance vessels. In terms of goods, imports reached 720,000 tons, while exports reached 190,000 tons.
