Russia Reports Fresh Drone Attack on Tankers in Taganrog Bay, Fires Break Out

Russia’s Rostov Region Governor Yuriy Slyusar said for the second time in just a few days that two tankers had been damaged in the Taganrog Bay during an overnight drone attack.

“In the Taganrog Bay, UAVs again attacked two tankers, which sustained mechanical damage. There were no injuries. The tanker crews were evacuated,” Slyusar wrote on Telegram.

According to the governor on Thursday, the strike sparked fires aboard both vessels. One fire was still being extinguished as of his latest update, while the other had been fully put out.

Slyusar also claimed that Russian air defenses had intercepted more than two dozen drones over the Rostov region overnight. However, Ukrainian authorities have yet to comment on the attack.

Ukrainian drones struck a convoy of Russian shadow fleet tankers in the Sea of Azov overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, setting several vessels ablaze and reportedly forcing the crew of at least one tanker to abandon ship.

Slyusar confirmed that two tankers bound for the port of Rostov were damaged in the attack.

At the time, he said two people sustained minor injuries and the crew of one of the vessels had to be evacuated.

“The tankers were empty, and there was no spill of petroleum products. Information about the consequences will be clarified,” he wrote following Tuesday’s attack.

Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) claimed that more than nine Russian tankers were hit during the latest operation near the Kerch Strait.

Occupied Crimea Faces Prolonged Fuel Shortages, Russian-Backed Governor Warns

Fuel shortages in occupied Crimea are worsening as Ukrainian strikes disrupt Russia’s energy infrastructure and exposed supply routes.

Combat footage released by the USF shows FP-2 drones striking multiple tanker-type vessels, targeting bridges, engine compartments, and fuel bunkers. The video appears to show several ships on fire, with no visible Russian air-defense response during the attack.

Earlier, the USF reported striking eight tankers transporting fuel to Russian-occupied Crimea, as well as one dry cargo ship and one ferry, during overnight attacks on Tuesday.

According to Ukrainian military sources, 21 civilian vessels have been damaged since Sunday, including 19 shadow fleet tankers, one dry cargo ship, and one automobile ferry.

The latest strikes are part of Ukraine’s broader campaign to disrupt Russian fuel supplies and logistics between occupied Crimea and mainland Russia.

Earlier attacks reportedly forced two fuel tankers carrying 7,000 tons of fuel each to abort their voyage to Crimea after catching fire, while Ukrainian military analysts said another eight shadow fleet tankers were hit the following night.

If confirmed, the operation would mark the largest Ukrainian strike campaign against Russia’s shadow fleet since the start of the full-scale war.

Ukraine argues that targeting the tankers is aimed at undermining a key source of Russian oil export revenue after Moscow assembled a large shadow fleet to circumvent Western sanctions.
