Russian forces struck Kyiv with ballistic missiles and drones in the early hours of July 2, killing at least 10 people, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Ukraine’s Internal Affairs Minister Ihor Klymenko put the death toll at 11, with more than 30 injured.
Damage and destruction were recorded at more than 30 locations across all of Kyiv’s districts, Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said. His figures put the number of injured at 56, including two children.
A five-story residential building was partially destroyed in the Darnytskyi district, and a nine-story building sustained damage from the first through sixth floors. In the Desnyanskyi district, a nine-story residential building was damaged and residents are trapped inside. Debris ignited a fire at a market in the Shevchenkivskyi district, and a private home caught fire in the Sviatoshynskyi district.
Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that its forces struck Kyiv with “long-range precision weapons” in response to what it called “terrorist attacks” on civilian infrastructure. The ministry claimed it hit defense industry facilities and energy infrastructure in Kyiv and the surrounding region, as well as military airfield infrastructure in the Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, and Kyiv regions.
