Swedish defence contractor Saab has announced plans to consolidate its naval operations into a single organisation called Naval.

The restructuring will combine the operations of business area Kockums with most of the Naval Combat Systems unit, which is currently part of business area Surveillance.

The new division is set to begin operations on 1 April 2026. Mats Wicksell, currently leading Kockums, will head the new business area.

Saab president and CEO Micael Johansson said: “We are consolidating and developing Saab’s naval offer to deliver greater value to our customers. By driving higher efficiency and accelerating innovation we are further strengthening our market position.”

Kockums focuses on the development, production, and support of submarines, surface ships, and naval systems. Currently, Saab’s naval operations are distributed across several units within the company.

The business area reported a 15% increase in sales and a 7.9% rise in earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) margin for fiscal 2025.

The Naval Combat Systems develops and produces combat management systems, fire control systems, and secure communications solutions, along with integrating these technologies.

Saab stated that merging its naval businesses will create synergies, enhance efficiency, and support innovation, thereby increasing value for its customers.

The company will provide restated historical financial data before the interim report for January–June 2026 to allow for year-on-year comparisons.

The restatement will not impact previously reported group total revenues or results.

In November last year, Poland selected Sweden’s proposal featuring Saab’s A26 Blekinge-class submarines for its Orka submarine programme.

Additionally, in October of the same year, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) placed an order with Saab for the final phase of production on two Blekinge-class (A26) submarines under a contract valued at approximately Skr9.6bn ($1bn).
