Some 100 portable shelters will be distributed among unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev, Southern District Police Commander Chief Superintendent Haim Bublil announced last week.

The decision came after appeals by local council heads and residents in the wake of shrapnel injuries that wounded a doctor and his infant son, due to the fact that many residents of unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev lack any protective infrastructure.

Bublil addressed the decision today during a special situational assessment with rescue and emergency bodies regarding the IDF Home Front Command’s plan to place approximately 100 portable shelters in Bedouin diaspora areas.

“This is a significant and necessary step to strengthen the protection of human life, especially in light of the threat of rocket and missile fire toward southern communities,” said Bublil.

“The placement of the shelters will provide residents with an immediate on-the-ground response and allow them access to a protected space during alerts. In doing so, it will significantly reduce the risk of injury.”

An 'effective response' for the South

“I have instructed that all relevant authorities work together to accelerate the deployment of the shelters in the field as much as possible, so that a rapid and effective response is provided to residents of the South," he added.

"The Israel Police Southern District will continue to operate with full operational readiness across the sector, in cooperation with all security and emergency bodies, to provide a swift response to any incident and to maintain public order, safety, and the well-being of the public,” Bublil concluded.
