When the Passover Haggadah was being written, there was a Jew (probably in medieval Europe) who sat down to describe the fate of the Jewish people in chilling words: "In every generation, they rise up against us to destroy us; and the Holy One, blessed be He, saves us from their hand!" Since then, and for good reason, these iconic words have been known to every Jew.
