Trump Announces Peace Deal ‘Largely Negotiated’ to End US-Iran War

US President Donald Trump has declared that a multi-lateral peace agreement to end the war with Iran is on the verge of finalization, marking a sudden and dramatic shift toward a diplomatic resolution in the Persian Gulf conflict.

In a comprehensive statement published to his Truth Social platform late Saturday evening, May 23, Trump revealed that the text of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding has been successfully hammered out following an exhaustive series of high-level diplomatic calls from the Oval Office.

A marathon of regional diplomacy

The White House announcement capped off a day of intense speculation regarding whether the US would choose to reactivate its suspended joint air campaign with Israel or finalize a transactional exit from the multi-billion-dollar conflict.

Trump confirmed he conducted coordinated discussions with an expansive coalition of Middle Eastern and South Asian leaders to cement the parameters of the peace framework. The phone conferences included Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Emirati President Mohammed bin Zayed, Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Trump also consulted with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa, and Pakistani Field Marshal Asim Munir, whose government has served as the primary backchannel mediator in Islamabad throughout the standoff.

Following the regional calls, Trump held a separate, focused discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to align security objectives, which the US President noted similarly “went very well.”

“An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries, as listed,” Trump stated. “Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly. In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened.”

From the brink of full-scale assault

The rapid diplomatic breakthrough stands in stark contrast to the aggressive rhetoric emanating from Washington earlier in the day. In an interview with Axios on Saturday afternoon, Trump had warned that the geopolitical situation sat on a razor’s edge, placing the odds of securing a favorable deal or completely resuming active combat operations at “exactly 50/50.”

Before convening the regional phone conferences, Trump had scheduled a high-level review at the White House with top advisers Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, alongside US Vice President JD Vance, to analyze Tehran’s latest counter-proposal.

Facing immense domestic political pressure due to skyrocketing domestic gasoline prices and declining poll numbers caused by the prolonged maritime war, Trump had openly weighed activating US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s finalized Pentagon escalation plan. That contingency script included launching hundreds of carrier-based combat aircraft, authorizing special forces raids on the Isfahan nuclear facility, and executing an amphibious Marine assault to seize Iran’s Kharg Island oil terminals.

“I think one of two things is going to happen,” Trump had told reporters prior to the calls. “Either I’m going to hit them harder than they’ve ever been hit before, or we’re going to sign a great deal.”

Resolving the nuclear and maritime deadlocks

While the official text of the agreement is expected to be unveiled in the coming days, statements from both Washington and Tehran indicate that the negotiations successfully bridged several deep structural divides.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that negotiators had reached the final stages of discussing the memorandum, which aims to formalize a permanent truce. To satisfy Washington’s strict prerequisite demands, Iran reportedly agreed to compromise on its nuclear enrichment trajectories and accept strict limitations on the management and physical location of its existing highly enriched uranium stockpiles.

In exchange, the United States and its regional allies appear to have addressed Iran’s core economic concerns, which previously centered on securing waivers from international oil sanctions and lifting the strict naval blockade imposed on Iranian ports since mid-April.

Most critically for the global economy, the deal permanently dismantles the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ military stranglehold over the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring that millions of barrels of crude oil from Iraq and neighboring Gulf states can safely resume transit through the critical waterway.
