Nuclear-powered US aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford will "temporarily" pull into port after a fire on board, officials said, as the war with Iran entered its third week.

Reuters reported that the carrier, operating in the Red Sea, is expected to head to Souda Bay in Crete for inspection and repairs.

The fire, which broke out in a laundry area, left nearly 200 sailors needing treatment for smoke inhalation and damaged about 100 sleeping berths, though critical systems remained unaffected.

The warship which is the world's largest aircraft carrier continues to be a key part of US operations in the region.
