US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Miami on Saturday evening to discuss regional developments and mediation efforts related to the war on Iran.
According to Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, the talks focused in part on Pakistani-led efforts to help de-escalate the conflict.
US State Department spokesperson Thomas Pigott thanked Qatar for its role as a key intermediary for Washington, particularly as the US awaits Tehran’s response to a proposed peace initiative. He added that the two sides also discussed US support for Qatar’s defence sector.
Mohammed bin Abdulrahman stressed “the necessity for all parties to engage positively with ongoing mediation efforts” in a way that could address the roots of the crisis through dialogue and lead to “a comprehensive agreement that achieves lasting peace in the region”.
