The bodies of 84 Iranian sailors recovered off the coast of Sri Lanka after their frigate was torpedoed by an American submarine on 4 March will be repatriated to Iran on Friday, according to the Sri Lankan foreign ministry.
“All the required local procedures have been completed and the (bodies of the) Iranians are being transported to a special plane for repatriation,” a spokesman for the ministry, Tushara Rodrigo, told AFP, adding that the 32 other rescued sailors “remain in Sri Lanka.”
The ship, IRIS Dena, was hit by a torpedo from a US submarine while it was returning from a naval exercise organised by India, amid the US-Israeli war on Iran.
