Thirteen people have been killed and 86 injured in a Russian strike on the city of Kyiv on the night of 1-2 July. Seven people have been pulled alive from under the rubble.

Quote from Klymenko: "As of now [08:00], 11 fatalities have been confirmed in the capital, with more than 30 people injured. Sadly, the number of casualties is expected to rise. People continue to seek medical treatment."

Update: The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported at around 09:00 that the death toll has risen to 13. Meanwhile, 34 residents have been rescued.

Klitschko added that 86 people are known to have been injured. Seventy of them have been hospitalised.

Details: Klymenko added that the Russians had destroyed part of a nine-storey residential building in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district. A search-and-rescue operation is ongoing there.

"The State Emergency Service is currently working to rescue people trapped under the rubble. Rescue workers have saved 17 people at this site, seven of whom were pulled alive from under the rubble. Sadly, one person has been killed," Klymenko said, adding that some people are still considered missing.

He added that over 20 residential buildings across Kyiv had been hit. Rescue workers continue to search at 15 locations.

Tkachenko previously reported that 28 locations across the city have been affected by the attack, predominantly residential areas and civilian infrastructure.

Background:

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on 1 July that Russia was preparing a new large-scale strike against Ukraine.
  • It was later reported that Russian forces had attacked Kyiv with drones. Subsequently, missiles were also reported heading towards the capital.
  • In addition, Russian forces launched a large-scale attack on Kyiv Oblast using drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Damage and destruction caused by the attack was recorded in five districts of the oblast, and three people were injured.
