Details: Zelenskyy mentioned the latest vile Russian strike on Poltava Oblast, where four people were killed, including two first responders, and 31 were injured. He also cited strikes on Kharkiv Oblast (one killed, four injured), Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (three injured) and Kyiv Oblast (three injured).

He added that overall, Russia's main targets that night were energy infrastructure facilities.

Quote: "It is utter cynicism to ask for a ceasefire in order to hold propaganda celebrations while carrying out such missile and drone strikes every single day leading up to it. Russia could cease fire at any moment, and this would stop the war and our responses. Peace is needed, and real steps are needed to achieve it. Ukraine will act in kind."

Background:

  • On 29 April, Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian leader, said that Vladimir Putin had held a phone call with US President Donald Trump, during which Putin said he is willing to declare a "ceasefire" on 9 May.
  • Zelenskyy said it was "dishonest" of Russia to kill Ukrainians and then ask for a one-day ceasefire.
  • On 4 May, Russia's Ministry of Defence unilaterally declared a "truce" for 8 and 9 May and warned that if the Victory Day parade in Moscow on 9 May is "disrupted", it will launch a large-scale missile strike on central Kyiv.
  • On the evening of 4 May, Zelenskyy said he had not received any official requests regarding ceasefire terms, as claimed by users on Russian social media communities. He added that Ukraine was announcing a ceasefire starting from 00:00 on the night of 5-6 May. "In the time left until that moment, it is realistic to ensure that silence takes effect. We will act reciprocally starting from that moment," he said.
