A powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake has struck northern Japan, sending strong tremors through the region. Authorities have not issued a tsunami warning.

"The Foreign Ministry is conducting a situation assessment with the relevant authorities in Israel and is examining the options for assistance," the statement said.
