Suwayda National Guard Objects to Jordanian Airstrikes

The leadership of the National Guard in Suwayda (southern Syria) issued a statement on Sunday, May 3, commenting on the latest airstrikes carried out by the Kingdom of Jordan in areas of Suwayda province.

The Guard, affiliated with Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, said the raids were carried out without prior coordination and caused panic and chaos among civilians, especially in border villages.

In the statement, it affirmed its rejection of what it described as turning military operations into a tool for settling political scores.

Accusations Against Damascus

At the same time, the Guard leadership stressed its position on combating drugs, describing the trade as a crime against humanity, according to its statement.

The sources of drug manufacturing are known and are concentrated, according to the wording of the statement, in areas controlled by the Damascus government and nearby areas under the influence of cross-border militias.

It rejected portraying Suwayda as a source of this trade, saying the province is under a siege that prevents the conditions needed to establish manufacturing facilities.

The National Guard leadership added that it had previously arrested drug promoters and users, and said its investigations indicate that the source of narcotic substances comes from areas under regime control, as part of what it described as attempts to “flood the mountain with poison.”

The statement criticized the Jordanian raids because of the absence of prior coordination, noting that some strikes, according to the statement, hit civilian homes and private property, including homes belonging to people known for their opposition to the Syrian regime.

It also said the information on which the strikes were based came from unreliable people linked to Damascus, according to the text of the statement.

The leadership called for a transparent investigation into the sources of information on which the military operations were based, and for compensating affected civilians.

Calls for an Investigation

In the same context, the statement held smuggling networks responsible for the drug trade, saying they operate under the cover of Syrian regime agencies and in coordination with cross-border actors.

It called on regional states and international bodies to pursue the major incubators of this trade.

The National Guard reviewed what it said were operations it carried out in recent months to combat smuggling, including targeting vehicles on smuggling routes east of the town of al-Rushaydah in December 2025, shooting down balloons loaded with Captagon pills in April 2026, and arresting people on drug trafficking charges.

The statement called for sending independent international forensic investigation teams to investigate the latest strikes and the sources of drug manufacturing, while declaring readiness to cooperate with Jordan in combating smuggling.

At the same time, it warned against exploiting the drug file to carry out political score-settling inside Suwayda.

The leadership concluded its statement by affirming that it would continue confronting the drug trade and rejecting the linking of Suwayda to being an incubating environment for this trade.

Jordanian Deterrence Operation

Jordanian warplanes launched a series of airstrikes on the evening of Saturday, May 2, targeting sites in the countryside of Suwayda province in southern Syria, in one of the broadest Jordanian military operations inside Syrian territory in recent months.

According to Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Suwayda, the raids hit several sites in the province’s eastern and northern countryside, including the home of a person accused of drug trafficking in the town of Malah, sites in the village of Busan and the city of Shahba, as well as areas near the village of Imtan, the towns of al-Kafr and Orman, and the village of al-Anat.

The Jordanian Armed Forces announced responsibility for carrying out the operation, which it named “Operation Jordanian Deterrence.”

They confirmed that they targeted sites belonging to weapons and drug traffickers along the northern border front.

The Jordanian Armed Forces said the operation was based on intelligence and operational information that enabled them to identify the locations of factories, workshops, and warehouses used by smuggling networks as bases for launching their operations toward Jordanian territory.

They said the strikes were carried out with high precision to destroy those sites and prevent drugs and weapons from reaching the kingdom.
