Quote from Zelenskyy: "This time, Moscow Oblast felt the reach of Ukraine's long-range capabilities. An oil refinery was hit at a distance of 500 km. I thank the warriors of the Security Service of Ukraine, the Unmanned Systems Forces, the Special Operations Forces, Defence Intelligence and the Rocket Forces for their effective work.

Russia must be forced to end its war against our people. And Ukraine's long-range weapons are one of the important components of such pressure.

This is a just response to Russian strikes – and to the dragging out of a war that must be ended."

Details: According to the Special Operations Forces, the Moscow Oil Refinery is of strategic importance for the Russian capital and the country's central region. The facility has a design capacity of up to 12 million tonnes of oil per year and a refining depth of up to 85%. The refinery supplies up to 40% of Moscow's petrol demand and around 50% of its diesel fuel needs. It is also a key element in the logistics chain for aviation fuel supplied to Moscow's airport hub.

Background:

  • Russian authorities reported a drone attack on Moscow on the morning of 16 June. According to the city's mayor, the oil refinery was damaged and a fire broke out at the site.
  • The refinery is located approximately 15 km from the Kremlin.
  • Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya) also announced temporary restrictions at Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo and Ramenskoye (Zhukovsky) airports.
