Former Bryansk Region governor becomes a State Duma deputy — the day after resigning as governor.

Russia’s Central Election Commission voted at a May 14 session to give a vacant State Duma seat to former Bryansk Region Governor Alexander Bogomaz, registering him as a deputy, the Russian news agency Interfax reported.

Commission member Konstantin Mazurevsky said the State Duma had terminated the mandate of deputy Airat Farrakhov ahead of schedule earlier that spring. Bogomaz had already submitted all documents required for registration, he said.

Bogomaz had led the regional group on United Russia’s list in the 2021 State Duma elections. At the time, he declined the mandate and remained governor.

Alexander Bogomaz is a native of Bryansk Region who had led the region since September 2014.

On May 13, Bogomaz submitted his resignation. Yegor Kovalchuk, former prime minister of the self-proclaimed LNR, was appointed acting governor.
