Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in St. Petersburg in the early hours of April 27, the Iranian agencies Mehr and Irna reported.
Araghchi landed at Pulkovo airport aboard a flight named “Minab 168” — a tribute to those killed in the shelling of a girls’ school in Minab, the agency reported.
His itinerary includes meetings with President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Araghchi said the trip was needed to keep up close consultations between Tehran and Moscow on regional and international issues and to strengthen ties between the two countries.
It is unclear whether the meeting with Putin will take place in St. Petersburg. The city is hosting a session of the Council of Legislators of the Federal Assembly today, the local outlet Bumaga reported — Putin attended the session last year. The day before, the Iranian Embassy announced that Araghchi would be coming to Moscow.
Abbas Araghchi is one of the lead negotiators in talks with Pakistan and the United States aimed at ending the war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
