Pistorius Makes Unannounced Visit to Kyiv for Defense Production Talks

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit on Monday to discuss expanding defense-industrial cooperation and joint weapons production with Ukraine, according to German N-TV outlet.

The trip was kept secret ahead of time for security reasons.

Speaking upon the arrival, Pistorius said Berlin and Kyiv are preparing new joint arms development projects, including advanced drone systems of varying ranges, some capable of striking deep behind enemy lines.

Germany is also seeking to establish additional joint defense ventures with Ukraine and deepen cooperation with Ukrainian weapons manufacturers, Pistorius said.

The German minister added that Berlin wants to draw on Ukraine’s battlefield experience gained during Russia’s full-scale invasion while increasing support for domestic defense innovation through Ukraine’s Brave One military technology platform.

At the same time, Germany is investing heavily in military logistics infrastructure to prepare for a potential large-scale war in Europe.

According to a Bloomberg report, Berlin has approved a €1.35 billion ($1.6 billion) upgrade of the port in Bremerhaven to improve the transport of heavy military equipment, including Leopard tanks, to potential front lines.

Pistorius has described the changes as a “paradigm shift,” warning that peace and stability in Europe can no longer be taken for granted.

Poland Ready to Host US Troops Withdrawn From Germany to Bolster NATO

Poland is prepared to host additional US military personnel after US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that the alliance with Washington is the “cornerstone” of national security and that Poland can provide the necessary infrastructure to bolster NATO’s eastern flank. The withdrawal primarily targets the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, a Stryker brigade stationed in Vilseck, Bavaria.

The German government is increasingly relying on private companies to help manage military logistics, transportation, and storage, amid concerns that the country’s armed forces lack the capacity to sustain large-scale deployments independently.

In April, Pistorius unveiled Germany’s first comprehensive defense strategy since World War II, naming Russia as the main threat to European security and warning that Moscow appears to be preparing for a possible confrontation with NATO.
