The Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov at the Kremlin and expressed support for Kadyrov’s bid for another term as the region’s head.

The independent Russian news outlet Novaya Gazeta Europe reported in March, citing sources, that Russia’s Presidential Administration had approved Kadyrov’s new term as early as last autumn, though Putin had not yet made a final decision.
Rumors of serious illness have trailed Kadyrov in the media and on social media for years. According to unconfirmed reports, he was diagnosed with pancreatic necrosis as early as 2019.
The election for the head of Chechnya will be held in September. Kadyrov has led the region since 2007.
