Seven people injured in the attack remain hospitalized in the capital, including one child. Four adults are in intensive care, while two others are being treated in the trauma department. All are receiving necessary medical assistance.
Authorities have officially classified the attack as a terrorist act, according to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Prosecutor General’s Office.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacker – a 58-year-old Russian-born man who had long lived in the Donetsk region – killed four people on the street and one hostage inside a Velmart supermarket before being killed by KORD special forces. Another victim later died in hospital.
Among the 14 reported injured is a 12-year-old boy, as well as the son of two of the deceased, born in 2015, who is being treated for a gunshot wound.
Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said the attacker used a legally registered firearm and had set fire to an apartment prior to the assault. Investigators are examining multiple possible motives, including the suspect’s communications.
“The state must act firmly and resolutely… there is no room for compromise,” Kravchenko said.
