U.S. President Donald Trump plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the NATO summit in Ankara and then call Russian President Vladimir Putin, informed sources told the Reuters news agency.
Both Zelensky and Putin had earlier called Trump to congratulate him on the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. Each conversation touched on ending the war in Ukraine.
After speaking with Trump, Zelensky said: “There is a real prospect to put an end to this war, and America’s resolve is decisive.”
Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, said Trump had had ”confirmed his willingness to facilitate the earliest possible end to the fighting and the search for solutions to overcome the crisis.”
The NATO summit in Ankara will take place July 7–8.
