Ukraine to Be Fully Integrated Into EU Air Defense, Drone Priorities, Von der Leyen Says

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Ukraine will be fully integrated into Europe’s air defense, drone and counter-drone efforts, marking a further step in Kyiv’s incorporation into the continent’s security architecture.

Von der Leyen made the statement after a phone call with President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying she had reaffirmed Europe’s support for Ukraine as Russia intensifies its war.

“On the phone with President Zelensky, I reiterated Europe’s full support for Ukraine as Russia doubles down on its brutal war of aggression,” the European Commission president wrote on X.

She said air defense, drones and counter-drone capabilities are now among Europe’s most urgent defense priorities – areas where Ukraine has gained extensive battlefield experience during Russia’s full-scale invasion.

“And Ukraine will be fully integrated into these efforts,” she said.

The statement reflects a broader shift  in Europe’s approach to Ukraine: from emergency military assistance toward deeper, long-term defense cooperation. Kyiv’s experience in countering Russian missile and drone attacks has become increasingly central to Europe’s own security planning.

Von der Leyen said the Ukraine Support Loan would make a “vital contribution” to that effort, providing €28.3 billion, ($32.9 billion), this year alone to help cover Ukraine’s military needs.
