Details: The comment referred to a report by The Washington Post suggesting that Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó might have disclosed details of confidential EU discussions to Russia.

The German Foreign Ministry spokesperson described the allegations against Szijjártó as very serious.

He stressed that discussions within the European Union and among foreign ministers are confidential and based on principles of sincere cooperation.

The spokesperson said that they would not tolerate any violation of those principles and that the Hungarian government now had to provide an answer.

The Washington Post report has sparked outrage in the European Commission and in EU capitals. Szijjártó himself dismissed the claims as lies and fake news.

The German Foreign Ministry spokesperson added that the accusations being made could certainly not simply be brushed aside with a post on X (Twitter).

Background:

  • Meanwhile, Hungary's opposition Tisza Party has pledged that, if it wins the elections, it will immediately investigate Péter Szijjártó's links with Russia.
  • Earlier, The Washington Post reported that Szijjártó had regularly provided his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov with real-time reports on what was being discussed at EU meetings, as well as information about possible decisions.
  • Media reports have also suggested that the EU is excluding Hungary from sensitive negotiations over fears of leaks to Russia.
