Indra will equip the submarines with its fully digital electronic warfare suite and an advanced radar.
Indra has signed a new contract with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to supply electronic warfare (EW) and radar systems for six additional Type 212CD submarines to be added to the German and Norwegian naval fleets.
Under the contract, Indra will provide its fully digital electronic warfare system and advanced radar units for the submarines.
The systems are intended to support protection, surveillance and situational awareness for the vessels in demanding environments.
The agreement increases the total submarines fitted with Indra’s systems to 12, adding to the six others already receiving similar systems.
Indra Naval Business Unit head Ana Belén Buendía said: “With the signing of this new contract, Indra consolidates its role as a key technology partner in one of the most advanced naval programmes in Europe, which is of strategic importance for Germany, Norway and the European defence industry as a whole.”
The new contract for electronic warfare and radar systems follows a contract awarded to Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace in December last year to deliver ORCCA combat system elements for four 212CD German Navy submarines and two for Norway.
The Type 212CD is a next-generation conventional submarine with air-independent propulsion (AIP) and a shared design for both countries. The model aims to strengthen the protection of North Atlantic waters and ensure interoperability with NATO forces.
Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), the prime contractor for the Type 212CD programme, is constructing six new submarines, two for the German Navy and four for the Royal Norwegian Navy.
In February, TKMS secured an expanded order from the Norwegian government for two additional submarines, raising Norway’s planned fleet under this programme to six vessels.
