Russian Drone Attack Sets Cargo Ship Ablaze, Kills Crew Member on Black Sea

A Russian drone attack hit a civilian cargo vessel bound for a Ukrainian port early morning on Monday, June 22, killing one crew member and setting the ship on fire, Ukrainian authorities said.

The Turkish-owned bulk carrier Victress, sailing under a Panamanian flag, was struck by a drone in the Black Sea, sparking a fire on board and causing significant damage, according to the Ukrainian Naval Forces and the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA).

Ukrainian naval forces launched a rescue operation, evacuating the crew on a lifeboat. One sailor – a 58-year-old cook – died in the attack.

“Sadly, a member of the crew died. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. The remaining eight sailors were evacuated on a life raft,” the USPA said.

Separately, regional Ukrainian authorities said Monday that Russian attacks killed two people – one in a missile strike on the port city of Odesa and another in a drone attack in southeastern Zaporizhzhia.

Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia regional military administration, said on Telegram that “three people have been wounded, another woman remains trapped in a burning house following an enemy attack on Zaporizhzhia.”

He later added that the woman’s death had been confirmed after the drone strike destroyed the home.

In Odesa, Ukraine’s emergency services said Russian strikes set fire to an agricultural enterprise.

Turkish FM Says Concerned by Ukraine War Escalation

Turkey is casting itself as a potential peacemaker between Moscow and Kyiv, seeking to bring the four-year war that has killed hundreds of thousands to a close.

“One person was killed as a result of yesterday’s missile strike on Odesa region’s civilian infrastructure. A further three people were wounded,” the service said.

Meanwhile in Russia, aviation authorities briefly shut down all four Moscow airports on Monday after a wave of drone interceptions.

Russia’s defence ministry said air defences shot down 301 Ukrainian drones across the country overnight.

The latest attack follows a separate wave of Russian drone strikes on June 19, when Kyiv reported that two civilian vessels were hit in the Black Sea, leaving one dead and several crew members injured.

“One crew member of a Panama-flagged ship was killed as a result of a Russian UAV attack on civilian vessels in the Black Sea,” Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration and Minister for Development of Communities and Territories, Oleksii Kuleba, said, adding that two sailors were injured, including one in critical condition.

He also reported that another vessel sailing under the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis was struck, leaving three crew members with minor injuries.

Kuleba described the attacks as part of a broader assault on maritime trade and global food security, warning that civilian crews and export routes remain under threat.

Ukrainian regional authorities later said port operations continued, though under tightened security conditions.
