Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Kremlin-appointed "governor" of Sevastopol, has said that the city was left without electricity following a large-scale drone attack on energy infrastructure on the night of 23-24 June.

Details: Eyewitnesses and monitoring Telegram channels claimed that a series of powerful explosions had been heard in occupied Crimea throughout the night. The main target was the Balaklava Thermal Power Plant in Sevastopol, one of the peninsula's key power stations.

"The city has been temporarily left without electricity due to the enemy attack on our energy infrastructure," Razvozhayev said.

"We will not be intimidated by a power outage. We've been through worse and we'll get through this as well," he added.

The extent of the damage to the Balaklava Thermal Power Plant is still being assessed. The occupation official sought to reassure residents while also urging them to conserve their mobile phone battery power.

Explosions were also reported overnight in Bakhchysarai, Kerch and near Mount Ai-Petri, where a radar station used by a Russian Aerospace Forces air surveillance battalion is located.

There were also reports of explosions and a fire near a thermal power plant in Simferopol.

Background:

  • Oleg Kryuchkov, adviser to the Russian-installed head of Crimea, announced the "preventive" introduction of rolling power cuts across the peninsula ahead of the attack on the evening of 23 June. Early reports indicated that around half of occupied Crimea had been left without electricity.
  • Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces reported strikes on fuel storage tanks at the Kerch Thermal Power Plant and the 330/110 kV Western Crimea electrical substation.
