US Urges Americans Not to Travel to Russia Amid Drone Attack Threat

The US State Department has issued a new security alert warning American citizens in Russia about drone attacks and explosions near the Ukrainian border and in major Russian cities, including Moscow, Kazan and St. Petersburg.

The alert, shared by the department’s TravelGov account on X and published by the US Embassy in Moscow, said unmanned aerial vehicle attacks and explosions have occurred across Russia as Ukraine’s long-range drone campaign increasingly reaches deep inside Russian territory.

“In an emergency, you should follow instructions from local Russian authorities and seek shelter,” the alert said.

The State Department advised US citizens to move away immediately in the event of a UAV or drone sighting and seek cover if necessary.

It also warned Americans not to approach, touch or photograph drones, debris or objects dropped by UAVs.

“Russian law prohibits sharing or publishing photos or videos depicting the aftermath of drone attacks, including images of UAVs or UAV parts,” the alert said. “Violating this law may result in a fine or imprisonment.”

The warning comes after a major Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow on Thursday, which Russian officials said injured 16 people in the Moscow region and struck the capital’s oil refinery for the second time in a week.

The Associated Press reported that the Tuesday attack disrupted more than 500 flights across Moscow airports and targeted a key oil refinery that produces a large share of the Moscow region’s fuel.

“US citizens are again advised and strenuously reminded not to travel to Russia,” TravelGov said.
