Zelensky on Chernobyl anniversary: Russia again putting world at risk of man-made disaster

On the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the world to prevent nuclear terrorism by Russia.

According to Ukrinform, Zelensky made this statement on Facebook.

“Forty years ago, the world faced one of the worst nuclear disasters—the explosion of the fourth reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A significant amount of radioactive material was released into the environment. Hundreds of thousands of people have been dealing with the consequences of that tragedy for years,” Zelensky said.

According to him, a sarcophagus was built over the destroyed reactor to contain the radiation. Later, more than 40 countries sealed it with a safe confinement to prevent new disasters.

“It is these two structures that protect against radiation leaks and contamination. Maintaining and protecting them is in everyone’s interest. But with its war, Russia is once again putting the world on the brink of a man-made disaster: Russian-Iranian ‘Shaheds’ constantly fly over the plant, and one of them struck the containment structure last year. The world must not allow this nuclear terrorism to continue, and the best way to do so is to force Russia to stop its insane attacks,” the head of state emphasized.

“We remember everyone who gave their lives while dealing with the aftermath of this tragedy. May the memory of all the victims of the Chernobyl disaster live on,” Zelensky added.

As reported by Ukrinform, Sunday, April 26, marks the 40th anniversary of the largest man-made disaster in human history.
