Details: During a visit to Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts on Tuesday 12 May, Pistorius said he believes Ukrainians currently have the upper hand and that Russia is experiencing a period of weakness, both economically and domestically, as well as on the battlefield.

He added that Ukrainian forces are making huge strides and that strikes on Russian military infrastructure in the rear are becoming increasingly precise and effective.

At Ukrainian command posts, Pistorius was shown how drones are being used for reconnaissance and to combat Russian weapons systems and troops. He was also able to observe ongoing operations firsthand. Ukraine has significantly enhanced its capabilities, especially since last year, and this is also expected to benefit the Bundeswehr – Germany's armed forces – within the framework of the strategic partnership between Kyiv and Berlin.

Pistorius said many people are now talking about a decisive phase of the war, possibly in Ukraine's favour.

Background:

  • On Monday 11 May, Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and Pistorius signed a letter of intent in Kyiv to launch Brave Germany, a joint programme for the development of defence technologies and support for innovative startups.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said during Pistorius's visit that Kyiv and Berlin are working on six joint weapons production projects.
