Not Just Russian Attacks Ruining Odesa

Moscow’s missiles and drones aren’t the only threats to Odesa’s architectural legacy. Today, unscrupulous property developers are trying to cash in on a moment of attention diverted by war.

Not Just Russian Attacks Ruining Odesa

Hemingway said it best of course: “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” The same case could be made for Odesa, Ukraine’s Black Sea port, a place full of mouth-watering architecture, a mind-bending mash-up of neoclassical, Gothic Revival, Art Nouveau, Moorish, Soviet Modern, and more. Walking down any given block, there are so many visual distractions – ornate friezes, historic plaques, wrought iron fantasies – that face-planting is a constant danger.

During the 19th century, just outside of the old city center, Odesa’s “French Boulevard” was the place to be, if you could afford it. Home to a globalized elite, Ukrainians, Russians, Jews, Italians, French and Greeks built posh villas and oversized country homes along the broad thoroughfare, places to escape the crowded downtown and still flaunt one’s wealth.

I strolled up the boulevard the other morning after reading a Telegram post claiming a grand old building had been “demolished” the night before when Russian drones and missiles had landed on Odesa. That an architectural gem might have been struck came as no great surprise. After all, the Kremlin bombs Odesa constantly, not distinguishing between the suburbs and the city, the old and the new, the ugly and the sublime.

There was a time in the first few months of the full-scale invasion when people thought that, alone of all Ukrainian cities, Odesa might be exempt from Russia’s impulse for blind destruction. After all, it was founded by none other than their Empress Catherine II, and the lingua franca remains Russian. Like Machu Pichu and the Taj Mahal, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, protected by international law.

Of course that proved to be a naive hope. The attacks come most nights and even sometimes during the day, just to make sure no one ever feels truly safe. The only thing the targets have in common is that they’re almost always civilian rather than military: homes, hospitals and hotels, shops and schools, museums and monuments, cathedrals and cottages.

Fin de siècle Odesa was a rich, cosmopolitan place, with much more in common with Paris, London and New York than with the rest of the Russian Empire.

Passing a forest of expensive but soulless modern high rises, which have replaced many of the old mansions, I arrived at number 10 French Boulevard, a proud imperial building, exuding wealth and stability. Set back from the busy road, its red brick and white stucco facade is slotted with stain glass windows showing vines heavy with bunches of grapes, a reminder of the villa’s origins as a winery. The place was certainly damaged, with bricks lying about and pigeons roosting in broken windows, but it was largely intact. Oddly there didn’t seem to be any drone or missile damage, none of the blast marks or shrapnel damage one would expect. Bullet (or drone) dodged, I thought. Then a friend texted me a disturbing rumor. The word was that this building hadn’t been touched by Russian explosives and the real story was that it was being illegally torn down by a greedy real estate developer.

Hoping the story was just a conspiracy theory, I returned the following day to find a small but brave group of protestors out in front of the villa being watched by the police. One young woman held up a placard that summed it up: “You destroy, just like the Enemy.” And that’s the question; ultimately, who will do more to destroy what makes this city by the sea so special, the Russians or rapacious real estate men?

The case of number 10 French Boulevard is not an isolated one. The city is increasingly full of characterless modern apartment blocks that stand upon the graves of venerable old villas. And unsurprisingly to any Odesan, several high-profile land seizure and corruption cases were brought against the city’s former mayor.

Fin de siècle Odesa was a rich, cosmopolitan place, with much more in common with Paris, London and New York than with the rest of the Russian Empire. It was Europe’s premier grain exporter, had a bustling stock and commodities exchange, a spectacular Baroque-style opera house, and all the other trappings necessary for a world class city. It was the money men of that era who made Odesa the architecturally sublime place it is, and it seems to be the money men of today who are doing their best to destroy that legacy.
