Andrei Zarenin, Russia’s deputy digital development minister, has volunteered to fight in the war in Ukraine, the Russian business daily Kommersant reported on April 2.
Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadaev informed staff of the decision through an internal channel on Yandex Messenger.
Shadaev said Zarenin had “been supporting our fighters at the front, delivering humanitarian aid, sending necessary equipment, and doing volunteer work.” He is expected to sign a contract with the Defense Ministry soon.
“I am proud of his decision and know that we will wait for Andrei’s return — alive, healthy, and victorious,” Shadaev added.
Zarenin had served as deputy digital development minister since May 2021. He was responsible for stimulating demand for Russian electronics and developing software and telecommunications equipment.
