Despite being held in the early afternoon midweek, the grand opening this past December of Chabad's flagship learning center in Jerusalem drew hundreds of celebrants and well-wishers. Conspicuous among the crowd of Lubavitcher rabbis and functionaries, dressed in traditional black garb and spilling out into the streets, was a contingent of bodyguards accompanying the wealthy donors – including some well-known Russian tycoons – invited to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
