Ukraine sends mass drone attack on Moscow as Russia’s unilateral ceasefire takes effect

Ukraine launched a mass drone attack on Moscow just after midnight on May 8, as Russia’s unilaterally declared ceasefire took effect, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.

By morning, Sobyanin reported that 27 drones bound for Moscow had been shot down, with no casualties or damage.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said a total of 264 drones had been destroyed over Russian regions after midnight.

Among the targets struck was the Yaroslavnefteorgsintez refinery in Yaroslavl, where a large fire broke out. Yaroslavl regional governor Mikhail Evrayev said no one was injured. Rostov Region Governor Yuri Slyusar said a Ukrainian missile had also been shot down over his region, in addition to drones.

Russia’s unilaterally declared ceasefire took effect at midnight on May 8 and is set to last through the end of May 9. Ukraine did not officially join it; President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces would respond in kind depending on Russian attacks.

Russian authorities repeatedly threatened to strike the center of Kyiv if Ukrainian forces continued attacks during the “ceasefire.”
