Russia is trying to cut Ukraine off from access to ports and frontline areas by increasing the number of attacks on port and railway infrastructure facilities.

Source: Oleksii Kuleba, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for Recovery and Minister for Development of Communities and Territories, in an interview with Radio Liberty's Ukrainian Service

Details: Kuleba noted that Ukraine's railway infrastructure is now subjected to around 10 attacks every night, while strikes on ports are also quite serious.

Quote: "Sadly, the enemy has chosen our logistics sector as one of its main targets, aiming to deprive us of either logistics to the ports, or logistics to Donetsk Oblast or frontline logistics...

The Russians want to do everything to destroy the country's export potential. But we, together with the military, are doing everything to protect our infrastructure... It is in the ports and at [the state-run railway operator] Ukrzaliznytsia that we are introducing the first teams which, according to a government resolution, can and already are conducting certain tasks to down drones, while not being military personnel but members of territorial defence volunteer units."

Background:

  • On 24 March, a Russian drone struck an electric-powered train in Kharkiv Oblast, killing one person and injuring others.
  • On 20 March, two civilian commercial vessels sailing under the flags of Palau and Barbados were damaged and two people injured in a Russian attack on Odesa Oblast.
