US and Iran set for first talks since Middle East strikes began 6 weeks ago

A US delegation led by Vice-President J.D. Vance has arrived in Pakistan for peace talks aimed at reinforcing a fragile two-week ceasefire and ending hostilities with Iran after more than five weeks.

The US negotiating team also includes Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, while Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said Brad Cooper, the head of US Central Command, had also travelled with the party.

The Iranian delegation, headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, landed in the Pakistani capital earlier on Saturday.

Deep mistrust continues to overshadow the talks.

Even the format of the negotiations remains uncertain, according to a report by Chinese state news agency Xinhua, which cited a source close to the issue.

Pakistan has prepared for two scenarios: face‑to‑face talks or indirect discussions in which the delegations will be in separate rooms at the Serena Hotel while Pakistani officials relay messages between them.
