According to the Command, the propulsion plant sustained no damage, with the ship remaining “fully operational”.

Two sailors suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening and are currently receiving medical treatment. Both are reported to be in “stable condition”.

The USS Gerald R. Ford, the lead vessel of the Ford-class, was delivered to the US Navy in May 2017. It was commissioned in July of the same year.

The aircraft carrier completed a composite training unit exercise for combat deployment certification in April 2023.

It has a displacement of about 100,000 tonnes, a length of 333 metres (m), a beam of 40.8m, and a flight deck that is 78m wide.

The Ford-class carriers are larger than their Nimitz-class predecessors but operate with between 500 and 900 fewer crew members.

The USS Gerald R. Ford is supporting Operation Epic Fury alongside the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).

Recently, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed to have hit the USS Abraham Lincoln with ballistic missiles. However, the US Central Command rejected the claim, stating the Lincoln was “not hit” and that the missiles “didn’t even come close.”

CENTCOM added: “The Lincoln continues to launch aircraft in support of CENTCOM’s relentless campaign to defend the American people by eliminating threats from the Iranian regime.”

The George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group also completed its Composite Training Unit Exercise recently, with indications that a Middle East deployment may follow.
