Elbit Systems of America (Elbit America) has secured a contract valued at $49.9m from the US Army Contracting Command based at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, to deliver Head-Up Displays (HUDs) for the Army’s Air Soldier System.

The agreement, structured as a Firm-Fixed-Price and Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity contract, extends through December 2030.

The terms include post-production support and are dependent on future purchase orders.

A HUD is a transparent screen placed in an aircraft cockpit so that pilots can view flight data such as airspeed, altitude, horizon, and navigation indicators without looking down. It projects this information directly in front of the pilot’s eyes while flying.

The colour HUD is part of the Army’s Air Soldier System, a set of lightweight equipment used in helicopters.

The Air Warrior HUD is currently used as a main flight display on US Army UH-60 Blackhawk and CH-47 Chinook helicopters.

Elbit America president and CEO Luke Savoie said: “In high-stakes environments, you don’t have time for uncertainty. Elbit America delivers combat-proven Heads Up Displays that provide aircrew the confidence to see first, act first, and win. This contract is a testament to the faith the US Army places in us to keep delivering key solutions to our soldiers and we’re proud of our continued partnership.”

Elbit Systems’ HUDs incorporate technologies such as high-resolution displays, video enhancement capabilities, and reduced power usage.

The company supplies over 5,000 HUD units worldwide for a range of aircraft, including fighter jets, trainers and military transport planes.

The Israeli Air Force and Lockheed Martin have previously selected Elbit to provide HUDs for advanced F-16 aircraft.

Elbit America electronic systems senior vice president Scott Tumpak said: “Since our inception, Elbit America has been dedicated to improving situational awareness through sophisticated displays that enhance a user’s understanding of the conditions outside their aircraft or vehicle.

“The Air Warrior Heads Up Display allows aircrew to focus on the mission because it’s designed to ensure safety, efficiency, and comfort for aircrew.”

In 2020, the US Army awarded Elbit Systems of America a five-year contract to supply spare parts for Aviators’ Night Vision Imaging System Head-Up Display (ANVIS HUD).
