Estonian President Alar Karis stated that Europe missed the opportunity to begin peace talks with Moscow at the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine.
According to Ukrinform, he claimed this in an interview with Yle.
In Karis’s view, Europe must have its own plans for Russia, and they need to be developed right now.
He stated that relations with Russia will remain difficult for a long time. However, he noted that change is possible, citing Germany after World War II as an example.
According to Karis, Europe made a mistake in 2022 by failing to force Moscow to the negotiating table after the battle for Kyiv.
“The EU has invested heavily in Ukraine. We must have our own plans regarding Russia. We need to start developing these plans right now, because processes within the EU take a long time,” Karis said.
“There is no other way out right now. We just have to get through these difficult times,” the Estonian president added.
Karis also refuted claims that he had demanded territorial concessions from Ukraine. According to him, this issue must be decided by Ukraine itself.
As reported by Ukrinform, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that work on the 21st package of EU sanctions against Russia has already begun.
