Iran has put forward a new peace proposal to the US, which includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, extending the ceasefire or potentially agreeing on a full end to the conflict, while postponing nuclear negotiations to a later date.

Details: Sources cited by Axios said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had indicated to mediators from Pakistan, Egypt, Türkiye and Qatar over the weekend that there is no internal consensus within Iran's leadership on how to respond to recent US demands. These include suspending uranium enrichment for at least 10 years and removing enriched uranium from the country.

Iran passed a new proposal to the US through Pakistani mediators suggesting that the crisis around the Strait of Hormuz and the US blockade should be addressed first. Under this plan, a ceasefire could be extended for a longer period or potentially replaced with a broader agreement to end the conflict.

Iran is proposing that nuclear talks begin at a later stage, after the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of the blockade and a new ceasefire arrangement.

According to the report, the White House has received the proposal, but it is not yet clear whether the US is prepared to consider it.

"These are sensitive diplomatic discussions and the US will not negotiate through the press. As the president has said, the United States holds the cards and will only make a deal that puts the American people first, never allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon," White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said.

According to three US officials, President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a Situation Room meeting on 27 April with his national security and foreign policy team regarding Iran.

The report noted that lifting the blockade and ending the conflict would remove leverage from President Trump in any future negotiations over Iran's enriched uranium stockpile and efforts to convince Tehran to halt enrichment. These remain key objectives for the US president.

Background:

  • Over the weekend, Trump said that US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would not travel to Pakistan for talks with Iran.
  • Trump also stated that Iran could call the US to negotiate an end to the conflict.
  • On 26 April, Trump said Iran's oil infrastructure could explode in about three days due to worsening technical issues caused by the US blockade.
