Details: The Turkish Foreign Ministry confirmed that on the morning of 22 June a vessel owned by a Turkish company and sailing under the Panamanian flag had come under a drone strike near Chornomorsk in Ukraine. Two Turkish crew members were injured as a result.

The ministry said the Turkish embassy in Kyiv and the consulate general in Odesa are monitoring the situation involving affected citizens.

"Our concern regarding these attacks, which threaten our interests in the Black Sea and regional security as a result of the escalation in the Russia-Ukraine war, is being conveyed to the authorities of both countries. Ensuring the safety of navigation for civilian vessels in the Black Sea remains one of our country's key priorities, and we call on all relevant parties to take measures to de-escalate tensions in the region," the ministry said.

Background:

  • Ukrainian authorities reported on 22 June that three civilian vessels in the Black Sea had come under Russian attack.
  • A crew member from Egypt was killed on a Turkish cargo ship while the rest of the crew – citizens of Türkiye and India – were rescued by the Ukrainian navy. The crews of the other two vessels were not injured.
