The U.K. Maritime Trade Operations agency reported an attack on a cargo ship eight nautical miles (about 15 km or nine miles) west of Iran's shores.
UKMTO added that there were no reports of damage to the vessel and that all crew members are "safe and accounted for." According to the agency, the vessel stopped after being fired upon.
UKMTO didn't mention who reportedly attacked the vessel.

The Israeli military said it killed "two terrorists who violated the cease-fire understandings" in southern Lebanon, saying they crossed what it referred to as the Forward Defense Line, separating IDF-occupied Lebanon from the rest of the country.
"Following the identification, the Israeli Air Force struck and eliminated the terrorists in order to remove the threat," the IDF said. The military said the two posted an "immediate threat," adding that it will "continue to act to remove any threat to Israeli civilians and its troops."

One person was killed and two others wounded in an Israeli drone strike overnight on the outskirts of al-Jbour in Lebanon's western Bekaa Valley, Lebanese state news agency said on Wednesday.
The strike was about 15 kilometers (9 miles) north of Israel's new Yellow Line in Lebanon.
Iran executed a man convicted of spying for Israel's intelligence service and passing sensitive information, the judiciary's news outlet Mizan reported on Wednesday.
Mizan identified the man as Mehdi Farid, saying he had held a position in a civil defence unit within a sensitive organisation and had used his access to gather and transmit information to Israel's Mossad.
His death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court and carried out after legal procedures were completed, Mizan said.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy attacked a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations agency reported on Wednesday, saying the incident was 15 nautical miles (about 28 km or 17 miles) northeast of Oman.
According to UKMTO, an IRGC gunboat attacked the vessel and "caused heavy damage to the bridge." The agency added that the crew was safe and that there were no reports of fire or environmental hazard.
Trump offered a combative social media post Tuesday night after indefinitely extending a ceasefire in the Iran war after talks in Islamabad failed to materialize.
Writing on his Truth Social website, Trump contended that "Iran doesn't want the Strait of Hormuz closed, they want it open" so they can sell their crude oil.
Trump said if he allowed that to happen, there "can never be a Deal with Iran, unless we blow up the rest of their Country, their leaders included!"
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the U.S. announcement will create "critical space for diplomacy and confidence-building between Iran and the United States," according to his spokesman.
"We encourage all parties to build on this momentum, refrain from actions that could undermine the cease-fire, and engage constructively in negotiations to reach a sustainable and lasting resolution," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said late Tuesday.
The secretary-general "fully supports" Pakistan's efforts to facilitate U.S.-Iran talks and hopes its efforts "will contribute to creating conditions conducive to a comprehensive and durable resolution to the conflict," Dujarric said.
