Iranian minister discusses Hormuz management with Omani counterpart

Iran’s deputy foreign minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi has said he exchanged views on the future management of the Strait of Hormuz with Abdulaziz Al-Hinai, Oman's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, during his trip to Muscat.

In a post on X, Gharibabadi said the views of the Hormuz management were exchanged within “the framework of paragraph five” of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and the sovereign rights of the coastal states.

Article 5 of the MoU calls for the removal of “technical and military obstacles” and demining by Iran within 30 days.

It adds that Iran will hold talks with Oman “to define the future administration and maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz in discussion with other Persian Gulf littoral states”.

These talks are to be in “line with the applicable international law and the sovereign rights of coastal states of the Strait of Hormuz”.
