Moscow Muddies the Info Waters to Hide How It’s Abandoned Its Ally

In the days following the US-Israel coordinated launch of “Operation Epic Fury,” the Kremlin opened a parallel campaign – not on the battlefield, but in the information space. Within hours, Moscow accused Washington of destabilizing the region and violating international law.

Although Russian President Vladimir Putin has not offered any tangible support to Iran, his regime has seized the moment to cast doubt on American credibility and redirect global attention from Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The pattern is familiar. When geopolitical events threaten Moscow’s strategic goal, the Kremlin positions itself as a guardian of international norms while portraying Washington as reckless and destabilizing. Following the strikes on Iran’s senior leadership, Putin publicly denounced the US and Iran of committing “a cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law.” Russia’s Foreign Ministry followed with accusations that the US and Israel had “engineered a “man-made crisis.” Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned that Washington could start WWIII.”

The Kremlin has steadily amplified these statements. In an article from Kremlin-sponsored outlet RT, Yevgeny Primakov, a Russian politician, claimed how the US’s “unprovoked aggression… carried out against the backdrop of ongoing peace talks – sends a damaging message: concessions have little value.”

Trump Says Tehran Dragged Gulf States Into War, Outlines Iran ‘Worst Case’ as Merz Visits White House

With Trump accusing Iran of widening the conflict by striking Gulf states, analyst Paul Goble cautioned that unclear end goals raise miscalculation risks.

This messaging campaign serves a clear purpose. By accusing Washington of sparking “the largest regional war yet,” Moscow hopes to erode Western unity and weaken support for Kyiv.

The strategy works only if there are cracks to widen – and there are. Preliminary polling has found nearly 6 out of 10 Americans oppose the operation. Although Republicans have tended to be more supportive, polling found many might renege on their support if American troops were injured or killed. Two days into the operation, four US servicemen have died.

US should remind Putin’s partners: With Russia on your side, you’re on thin ice.

Support has also been mixed abroad, with even US allies like France, the UK, and Germany urging the US and Iran to return to negotiations.

Putin does not need to invent fractures; he only needs to exploit existing ones. RT has been ready to do exactly that. It did not miss the opportunity to inflame polarization, pointedly asking: “Why are Americans killing and dying for Israel, again?”

Russian Telegram channels have also been busy in the information space, openly discussing how strikes on Iran could serve Moscow’s strategic interests. One prominent channel, Voenny Osvedomitel (“Military Informant”), argued that the fewer PAC-3 interceptors and Patriot launchers Ukraine receives, the more Russian ballistic missiles will penetrate Ukrainian defenses. Russia’s Rybar channel echoed similar narratives.

Despite portraying Russia as a rescuer amid Western violence, Kremlin messaging is often ambivalent about actual commitments to its struggling ally. Russian military analyst Andrei Ilnitsky warned against being “pulled into the vortex” of a broader regional war and urged Moscow to “stay the course and pursue our own strategic line.” Even Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that “BRICS membership does not include obligations to provide assistance in times of armed aggression.”

When faced with the prospect of costly escalation, Moscow has consistently chosen to limit its assistance. The US should take the opportunity to counter the Kremlin’s information offensive reminding Putin’s partners: With Russia on your side, you’re on thin ice. Information operations are a low-cost, high-yield instrument in Putin’s strategy. In modern conflict, narrative is a weapon. The Kremlin understands this. The United States should understand this, too.
