Details: Two representatives of the American military leadership, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the special forces fighters – including Army Rangers and Navy SEALs – have not yet been assigned specific tasks.

As specialised units, they may be tasked with operations in the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively closed, or with the seizure of Kharg Island – Iran's oil hub.

They may also be involved in operations targeting Iran's highly enriched uranium at the nuclear facility in Isfahan.

The special operations forces fighters have joined 2,500 marines and a further 2,500 sailors who recently arrived in the region.

In total, more than 50,000 American military personnel are currently in the Middle East – approximately 10,000 more than usual – as President Donald Trump decides on his next step in the war, which has now been ongoing for more than a month.

Background:

  • The previous day, Trump stated that he would like to "take the oil in Iran" following the example of the scenario in Venezuela.
  • Trump also claims that Iran has agreed to most of the 15 points on the list of demands the US relayed via Pakistan with the aim of ending the war.
