At the June 19 press conference, Nabiullina was asked why she had been absent from public view for so long. She said she had had a cold.
“I can only confirm that I did indeed have a cold. I lost my voice for a time. And the only thing I can say is to thank those who were genuinely concerned about my health,” Nabiullina said.
During her absence, Nabiullina missed the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a conference of the National Association of Securities Market Participants, and a meeting with Putin at which inflation and the key interest rate were discussed. The string of absences fueled speculation about a possible resignation by the central bank governor.
Russia’s central bank press service had said Nabiullina was on sick leave. According to the Financial Times, she had suffered a severe respiratory infection, the outlet reported.
Nabiullina is serving her third term as central bank governor, which by law must be her last. Her term expires in a year, in June 2027.
