Russia’s central bank head Nabiullina makes first public appearance since early June

Russia’s central bank head Elvira Nabiullina appeared at a press conference after the bank’s board meeting on the key interest rate — her first public appearance since early June.

A livestream of the event is available on the regulator’s website.

At the June 19 press conference, Nabiullina was asked why she had been absent from public view for so long. She said she had had a cold.

“I can only confirm that I did indeed have a cold. I lost my voice for a time. And the only thing I can say is to thank those who were genuinely concerned about my health,” Nabiullina said.

During her absence, Nabiullina missed the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a conference of the National Association of Securities Market Participants, and a meeting with Putin at which inflation and the key interest rate were discussed. The string of absences fueled speculation about a possible resignation by the central bank governor.

Russia’s central bank press service had said Nabiullina was on sick leave. According to the Financial Times, she had suffered a severe respiratory infection, the outlet reported.

Nabiullina is serving her third term as central bank governor, which by law must be her last. Her term expires in a year, in June 2027.
