WASHINGTON — Austal USA has tapped Gene Miller to serve as the company’s president, after serving as interim president since February.

“Gene’s selection reflects our confidence in the leadership team we have built and the direction Austal is moving toward,” Austal USA Chairman of the Board of Managers Chris Chadwick said in a news release Wednesday. “Since stepping into the interim role in February, he has demonstrated the qualities we have been looking for: operational discipline, a commitment to the workforce and the ability to deliver results. He has the relationships and strategic clarity to carry Austal USA’s momentum forward at a critical moment for our industry and for national defense.”

Miller joined Austal USA in 2024 as the company’s chief operating officer, after serving as the director for amphibious ship programs with Ingalls Shipbuilding and spending more than 20 years with General Dynamics Bath Iron Works.

Austal USA announced in February that he would serve as interim president after revealing that outgoing president Michelle Kruger would depart her post on June 1. Then, the company shared that Miller was also being considered as a permanent replacement.

Austal USA is a subsidiary of Australian-based Austal Limited, and builds both steel and aluminum ships for the Coast Guard and the Navy, including the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship.
