Details: At a round table attended by officials from both sides as well as representatives of German industry, Pistorius said that Germany is learning from Ukraine in areas such as unmanned aerial vehicle technology and cyber defence.

"Ukraine is a country that, out of necessity, has developed an unbelievable capacity for innovation and speed," he said. "They do not develop technologies under laboratory conditions, but rather – quite literally – on the battlefield."

Pistorius added that Germany's Defence Ministry intends to send additional military attachés to its embassy in Kyiv, where they will serve as liaison officers to deepen defence cooperation.

Katherina Reiche, Germany's Minister for Economic Affairs, who also took part in the talks, announced plans to establish a special coordination office for German companies interested in working with Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Germany's Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said after the talks that Germany's 2027 budget – due to be presented on Wednesday 29 April – will demonstrate continued government support for Ukraine.

Background:

  • According to earlier announcements, Germany intends to provide Ukraine with €11.6 billion in 2027, followed by €8.5 billion annually between 2028 and 2030.
  • Pistorius recently also said that Ukrainian defence technologies are already in demand globally and are becoming a source of innovative solutions.
  • During a phone call with Pistorius in early April, Ukraine's Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov discussed joint projects to be implemented in the near future.
