Honduras Plans to Buy Ukrainian Drones for Border Security

Honduras is planning to purchase Ukrainian drones as part of efforts to strengthen border security and combat organized crime, President Nasry Asfura said on Monday, June 22.

The announcement follows a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv last week, where the two leaders discussed cooperation in military technology and unmanned systems.

Honduras interested in Ukrainian drone expertise

Speaking in Panama City during the General Assembly of the Organization of American States, Asfura said Ukrainian drone technology could help authorities monitor remote regions and disrupt criminal networks.

“We are talking about drones to protect our borders, to efficiently guard our borders, to fight against organized crime with high-tech equipment,” Asfura said.

He added that Ukraine “can help us a lot to further secure our borders and fight drug trafficking,” describing the issue as a matter of national security.

According to Euronews, Zelensky highlighted Ukraine’s experience in drone warfare during the talks.

“In terms of security today, in military and drone technologies, Ukraine is one of the strongest in the world,” Zelensky told the Honduran leader.

Ukraine expands defense partnerships abroad

Ukraine has become a global leader in drone development since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, using unmanned systems extensively for reconnaissance, targeting and long-range strike missions.

The proposed deal reflects Kyiv’s efforts to expand defense technology cooperation beyond Europe and showcase capabilities developed during the war.

Honduras has long struggled with drug trafficking, gang violence and organized crime. Authorities say the country is increasingly concerned about local cocaine production and the activities of criminal groups such as MS-13 and Barrio 18.

Asfura said Ukrainian drones could also have civilian applications, including support for agriculture and infrastructure monitoring.

Honduras is one of the main transit routes for cocaine shipments moving from South America toward North America. The country recorded a homicide rate of about 24 per 100,000 people in recent years, while authorities continue to battle drug cartels and heavily armed criminal groups operating along remote border regions.

On March 11, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian anti-drone experts have begun work on defending Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates from Iranian attacks.

Kyiv is also reportedly in talks with the US and the Gulf States about supplying more than its expertise. Ukrainian interceptor drones are a cheap and efficient alternative to traditional air-defense missiles.

Zelensky previously said that Ukraine had sent interceptor drones and a team of drone experts to protect US military bases in Jordan.
